The OWSD PhD Fellowship program is administered with financial support from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency and it is awarded in partnership with host institutes in the developing countries.

The fellowship is for contributing to the emergence of a new generation of women leaders in the field of science and technology, and for promoting their effective participation in the technological and scientific development of their countries.

Applicants can select between 2 study schemes:

❶a full-time fellowship (maximum 4 years funding): Under this scheme, a research is conducted completely at a host institute in another developing country of the South.

❷a sandwich fellowship: For this scheme, applicant needs to be enrolled as a doctoral student in her home country and conducts part of her studies at a host institute in another developing country.

It is important to note that the sandwich fellowship scheme is offered for one (minimum) and 3 (maximum) research visits at the host institute. The minimum period of the first visit is six months. The total number of months spent at the host institute can’t be more than twenty months. The duration of funding can’t be more than four years.

Eligible candidates are particularly encouraged by OWSD for choosing the sandwich scheme that allows candidates to do their PhD studies in their home country at the same time having access to equipment abroad and specialist researchers, at the host institute.

Benefits

The benefits covered by the OWSD fellowship include:

❶A modest annual support allowance for being used at the student’s discretion for supporting their research environment.

❷A monthly stipend for covering basic living costs like meals and accommodation when you are at the host country.

❸Visa fees.

❹Annual contribution to medical insurance.

❺A return ticket from the candidate’s home country to the host institute for the agreed duration of the research.

❻Study fees (comprising registration and tuition fees) in agreement with the selected host institute that is also expected to give a contribution.

❼The opportunity for attending regional science communications workshops, based on competition.

Who Should Apply?

Candidates from Africa, Arab region, Asia & the Pacific, and Latin America & the Caribbean as specified on the list of eligible countries can apply.

The OWSD PhD Fellowships are awarded for doctoral studies in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. That is why applicants who want to do doctoral studies in the other fields are not eligible for this fellowship program.

In fact, eligible fields include: Astronomy, Space and Earth Sciences, Agricultural Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Computing and Information Technology, Biological Systems and Organisms, Mathematical Sciences, Physics, Neurosciences, Structural, Cell and Molecular Biology, Medical and Health Sciences, and Engineering Sciences.

Academically, the eligible applicant for the OWSD PhD Fellowships must have the MSc degree in one of the study areas listed above.
