Currently, the Brenthurst Foundation is calling for eligible candidates (young graduates) to submit their applications for the Machel-Mandela Fellowship Program. This is an internship given the name in honor of former President of South African Nelson Mandela and his wife Graca Machel. This fellowship program aims to become the most prestigious internship program of its kind in the continent of Africa. The Machel-Mandela Fellowship Program contributes in sharpening the Brenthurst Foundation’s focus on Africa’s burgeoning youth population and helps to nurture future leaders of Africa.

For the 2022 intake, the fellowship will be offered full-time for a minimum period of 6 months. The fellows will be based at the headquarters of the Brenthurst Foundation in Parktown, Johannesburg, and they will do the internship by working directly with and by assisting the staff of the Foundation on various activities and projects, some of which requiring to travel abroad.

The selected candidates for the Machel-Mandela Fellowship Program are expected to do various tasks ranging from discussion paper writing on a topic relating to economic development to the provision of assistance with the hosting of events as well as mucking in with office chores.

Benefits

The Machel-Mandela Fellowship Program covers an all-inclusive monthly stipend and accommodation, if necessary (following the policy of the Foundation) will be offered. Other costs related to the work may also be paid following agreement to be made with the Foundation.

Who Should Apply?

The candidates from South Africa or farther afield are accepted. Other requirements include:

❶Having a Master’s degree

❷Being less than 30 years old.

❸Having excellent written and spoken English. African and other languages would be an advantage.

❹Being reliable and enthusiastic, a self-starter requiring minimum management and oversight.

❺Being fluent in all basic IT skills

❻Having excellent communication skills

❼Having broad knowledge of economics and politics in Africa.

❽Having ability for balancing attention to detail and deadlines.

❾Having a passion for Africa and a keen interest in new thinking and strategies for strengthening economic performance of Africa.

❿Having proof-reading and copy-editing skills would be an asset.

❶❶Being familiar with the work of the Brenthurst Foundation .

Important Dates

The closing date for submitting applications is February 28, 2022 while the shortlisted applicants will be contacted by March 31, 2022. The successful candidate is expected to start the appointment in May 2022.
